There are certain forms of injury that may not show their full symptoms (or any symptoms) until some time after the actual event, and a good example here is certain injuries sustained during a car accident. While some of these injuries may hurt right away, there are others that may show up in delayed or otherwise hidden ways.

At Foundation Chiropractic, we’re here to help with a wide variety of auto accident chiropractic care services, including for delayed or similar injury types that aren’t necessarily present at the time of your accident. Why do some of these injuries take place, what are examples of them, and how does proper chiropractic care help you reduce pain and recover optimally from these kinds of injuries? Here’s a primer.

Why Some Car Accident Injury Symptoms Are Delayed

The primary reason for delayed injuries after a car accident: Adrenaline. Because a car accident is a major event and because our bodies are primed to respond as soon as they can, adrenaline is released in massive quantities. And this release of the hormone and neurotransmitter prevents pain at least for a little while.

For this reason, certain injuries may not begin hurting until this adrenaline wears off. Unfortunately, this can sometimes mean that the full extent of injury isn’t clear until some time has passed, and that certain injuries don’t even show up at all during the car accident.

Examples of Delayed Car Accident Injuries

Thankfully most car accidents result in immediate pain and symptoms, but there are a few examples of delayed or hidden injuries that may occur, including:

  • Whiplash: Whiplash is the number one culprit here, though whiplash also has immediate symptoms as well in some cases.
  • Headache: Tension and migraine headaches are just two examples of delayed headaches that might indicate a car accident, but sometimes not until hours or even days after the event.
  • Chronic pain or stiffness in the neck or back: Chronic pain in the neck and back is a common problem for many people, but what can happen after a car accident is that this pain simply doesn’t go away or gets exacerbated.

How Chiropractic Care Helps

Whether you felt your injury symptoms immediately or with some delay, chiropractic care can help. Our car accident chiropractors will work to get you back on the road to recovery as soon as possible, and this may include taking an X-ray of the affected area if necessary — plus potentially a variety of other tests. If your injury was related to a car accident, the chiropractic care provided here may include gentle manipulations and exercises for neck or back pain, or other treatments as needed.
