Decompression Therapy

Our chiropractors may offer decompression, also known as spinal decompression, to help relieve back, neck, or leg pain. Decompression therapy works by stretching the spine using a traction table or a similar motorized device to promote a healing environment within the body. This will relieve the conditions that cause pain and discomfort. When you receive a spinal decompression treatment, our chiropractors stretch and relax your spine in a controlled manner at intermittent intervals. This process works to create negative pressure within the disc to do two things:

  • Pull herniated or bulging disc material back into the disc
  • Promote the passage of healing nutrients into the disc to create a better healing environment

During your treatment, your will lie on a motorized table. Our doctors will place a harness around your hips, and attach it to the lower half of the table. The upper part of the table will then remain stable, while the lower part moves back and forth to stretch the spin and provide the traction and relaxation necessary for an effective decompression treatment. While you should feel a stretch in your spine during the treatment, you should not experience pain during or after your procedure.

Decompression therapy typically consists of a series of 15-30 treatments over a 4-6 week period. Each session should last 30-45 minutes. Your treatment may also include additional therapies, such as electric stimulation, cold or heat therapy, and ultrasound.
