There are several types of trauma that may cause significant back or neck issues, and one of the most common and well-known types here is a vehicle accident. Because these incidents tend to include sudden stops and major exertions of force that swing the body back and forth, the neck and back are two areas that are commonly impacted.
At Foundation Chiropractic, we’re here to offer comprehensive car accident chiropractor services, from whiplash treatment to several other areas that may be impacted by an auto accident. One of the additional risks with vehicle accident injuries is the way their symptoms are often delayed, sometimes by a few hours but in other cases by days or even weeks. This leads to risks of non-treatment for these conditions, which in turn leads to long-term pain and other alignment concerns. Let’s go over some of the most common injuries sustained in vehicle accidents, plus the dangers of not receiving medical attention for these conditions.
Back Injury Risks
One of the most common injury types in a variety of car accidents is to the back, which will often be rocked or thrown out of alignment by the impact of the collision. Unfortunately, many who are in such accidents only seek medical or chiropractic care if their back pain is immediate and significant.
This glosses over the reality that, without proper examination, it’s really impossible to know how much damage there is – even if pain is only moderate. Without such an exam, you could develop chronic back pain, posture issues, muscle spasms and other issues. For this reason, even if your pain is minor or virtually nonexistent, it’s important to seek an examination and subsequent back pain treatment.
Whiplash and Delayed Symptoms
Another condition that’s common in car accidents and is well-known for delayed conditions is whiplash, or the sudden jerking of the head forward and then backward during the collision. This movement can lead to several areas of pain, including muscles, ligaments and tendons in the neck and back area.
As we noted, however, those suffering from whiplash often don’t feel it right away. Even if this is the case for you, you should seek immediate medical assistance and whiplash treatment if you notice symptoms at any point. Failure to do so can lead to chronic pain and increased symptoms over time.
Untreated Brain Trauma Risks
Finally, one of the highest-risk areas here is the potential for a brain injury during a vehicle accident. Once again, signs and symptoms here are not always immediate or obvious – in fact, someone can sustain a concussion in a car accident and never lose consciousness or have any clue they sustained the injury at all. If there’s even slight potential that such an injury occurred, whether or not you feel specific symptoms, medical treatment should be sought to avoid issues like insomnia, mood changes, memory issues and even depression that can result from untreated brain injuries.
